US President Donald Trump has claimed that Iran’s leadership, headed by Supreme Leader Ayatollah Seyyed Ali Hosseini Khamenei, has reached out to Washington seeking negotiations, even as the Islamic Republic grapples with widespread anti-government protests and mounting international pressure.
Speaking to reporters aboard Air Force One, Trump said Iranian leaders had contacted him to set up talks. “They want to negotiate. A meeting is being set up,” he said, while cautioning that the United States “may have to act before a meeting” if the situation deteriorates further.
Trump accused Iran’s rulers of governing through violence, alleging that civilians had been killed during the unrest. He said the US military was closely monitoring developments and that “very strong options” were under active consideration. However, he declined to outline any specific military plans, insisting that no details on timing or targets would be made public.
The President said he was receiving hourly briefings on events inside Iran and would take a decision based on evolving ground realities. Addressing the possibility of retaliation by Iran or its allies, Trump issued a stark warning, saying any hostile response would be met with unprecedented force.
Iran has witnessed repeated waves of protests in recent weeks, with demonstrators across multiple cities demanding sweeping political change, placing the regime under its most intense pressure in years.
